The central California margin is a system on which society increasingly depends. Submarine telecommunications cables cross its active fault zones, coastal communities sit beside canyons that funnel powerful sediment flows to the deep ocean, and an active tectonic setting generates earthquake and tsunami hazards on timescales that exceed human memory but fall well within the planning horizons for critical infrastructure.
Monterey Bay and the central coast host an extraordinary concentration of research institutions and long-term observing programs converging on a single, tectonically active and ecologically rich margin. That density makes the region a rare model system — perhaps the best opportunity anywhere to connect real-time sensing, process understanding, hazard assessment, and stewardship in one coherent framework. This portal brings that community's work together.
About the Community
This is a regional community of geologists, geophysicists, marine ecologists, oceanographers, technology developers, and ocean biogeochemists studying how sediment, energy, nutrients, and carbon move from the coastline to the deep ocean — and what that means for hazards, infrastructure, and ocean stewardship. We span academic, governmental, non-profit, and industry institutions across Monterey Bay and the central California coast.
Our shared premise: the challenges this region faces — earthquake resilience, coastal adaptation, carbon accounting in marine systems, responsible intervention in ocean chemistry — are global challenges. If integrated, process-based understanding of a coastal-to-deep-ocean system can be built anywhere, it can be built here, and the methods will transfer to less-studied margins worldwide.
