Hubert Schenck Memorial Scholarship

The Hubert Schenck Memorial Scholarship Outstanding Graduate Student Award is given to a graduate student who shows exceptional distinction in teaching, research, and scholarship.

Hubert Gregory Schenck (1897–1960) was one of Stanford University's most influential geologists, paleontologists, and educators. Joining Stanford as an instructor in 1924, he became a renowned expert on molluscan fossils and was a pioneer in introducing microfossil studies to California geology.

His research helped unravel the geologic history of California's Coast Ranges, particularly during the early Tertiary period, and many of his scientific publications became foundational works in paleontology and stratigraphy. At Stanford, Schenck was especially celebrated as an exceptional teacher and mentor. He reorganized geology curricula, trained generations of students who later became leaders in geology and paleontology, and was known for emphasizing rigor, integrity, and scientific discipline. His students often regarded him as the most influential teacher of their academic careers.
